Artist Statement
Being a Black American often means navigating dual realities: a deep sense of pride and cultural belonging, alongside the persistent truths of inequality and discrimination. My art emerges from this place, seeking to create beauty, connection, and balance in the face of life’s challenges.
I find inspiration in creativity across mediums and cultures, as well as in the quiet, generative act of gardening. Tending to plants teaches me patience, care, and the value of nurturing life—principles that infuse my artistic process.
I believe we must create to counter all that is destructive in the world. My work is meant to uplift, to inspire a sense of belonging and self-worth. If you live with my artwork, my hope is that you feel better about yourself and more at peace in your environment.
Painting Process
I paint with acrylic paints on birch panel. In this recent series I wanted to explore my garden, and interdependency. I begin by applying paint in a watery and loose manner. I try to establish the composition, movements, and color palette at this time. After this initial layer has dried the engagement in developing the painting begins. My initial notion is still there but I am making visual decisions based on what is currently on the painted surface. I work on building layers of complexity and emotional resonance.
